Emma Harper is facing calls to apologise to the Scottish Parliament after she claimed Scottish Secretary Alister Jack has failed to reply to numerous letters.
The South Scotland SNP MSP claimed in a Holyrood debate that she had written to Mr Jack “on 19 separate occasions and I have never once had a reply.”
Mr Jack’s office immediately asked for details of the correspondence but has yet to receive a response.
A spokesperson for Mr Jack, MP for Dumfries and Galloway constituency, said: “Emma Harper has never raised this directly with Alister and he was extremely surprised and concerned by her comments in the Scottish Parliament.
“She claimed she had written to Alister on numerous occasions both in his capacity as Secretary of State for Scotland and as a constituency MP.
“But the Scotland Office have no record of any correspondence from Emma.
“Alister’s constituency office, meanwhile, has been contacted on two occasions and sent replies both times.”
The spokesperson added: “Alister’s constituency office immediately contacted Emma’s office for further details of the correspondence as this is an extremely serious claim which could mean people are not getting the help they need.
“Unfortunately, his office has not received a reply.
“Emma must urgently provide details of the 19 letters she claims have gone unanswered. If she cannot do that she must consider whether she needs to apologise for misleading MSPs and correct the official record at Holyrood.”
