Local MP Alister Jack has welcomed the latest injection of UK Government funding into his Dumfries and Galloway constituency.
The £190,000 grant from the Department of Media Culture and Sport will help deliver a new improved artificial grass pitch to Palmerston Park during the coming months.
It should secure a pristine replacement of the ageing artificial surface at the Dumfries ground which has proved unpopular with some players.
The work, planned to be completed in the summer, will cost an estimated £271,518.
Mr Jack, who is also Scottish Secretary, commented he was delighted the funding award to the club’s community trust had been confirmed.
He said: “The grants are aimed at facilities that can be used for a number of sports and have availability at grass roots community level. Palmerston and other facilities Queen of the South look after very much tick the boxes.
“Queen of the South FC is at the heart of the Dumfries community and, indeed, the wider region. I feel sure the new surface will be well-used and inspire more people to get fitter with the resulting mental and physical health benefits that brings.”
The latest round of grants in Scotland, worth £2million, has been awarded to 23 projects selected in collaboration with the Scottish Football Association.
