Local MP Alister Jack has personally congratulated Rishi Sunak on his appointment as Prime Minister.
He said: “I firmly believe Rishi has the expertise and skills to deal with the significant challenges facing the country.
“There is much to be done: ranging from the aftermath of the pandemic to the global commodity shortages which have contributed to price rises putting such a strain on household, third sector and business finances.
“We need to bring stability to our economy and our public finances, deliver long-term prosperity for everyone in our country, and continue to sustain and strengthen the Union.”
Mr Jack was invited to 10 Downing Street on Tuesday evening when he was re-appointed Secretary of State for Scotland by Mr Sunak and attended the new PM’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning followed by PMQs in the House of Commons.
Commenting on retaining his Cabinet role, the Dumfries and Galloway constituency representative said: “I look forward to welcoming Rishi Sunak on his first visit as Prime Minister to Scotland and will certainly highlight to him the attractions and strengths of the south west.”
Mr Jack praised the fact Mr Sunak made an early telephone call in his new role to Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and, as Scottish Secretary, expressed the hope the SNP / Green administration at Holyrood would engage positively on joint issues and initiatives with the UK Government moving forward.
