Dumfries and Galloway MP Alister Jack expressed deep disappointment at the result of the House of Commons vote.
He said: "The Prime Minister secured a deal which preserved the integrity of all the UK and was clearly the option which offered the stability needed to best protect jobs and our economy.
"It was a pragmatic agreement that achieved many of the objectives of the majority who voted for Brexit while also reflecting the closeness of the referendum result.
"I hope colleagues who rejected this deal will reflect on tonight's vote and embrace any further opportunities there might be to reach an agreement in the coming days in a spirit of compromise.
"I firmly believe many people in my constituency -- and across the country -- together with industry and commerce are desperate to see an end to the damaging divisions and uncertainty of recent months."
