Dear Constituent,
Thank you for contacting me about the integrity of the UK as the country leaves the EU.
The bonds between the people of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are special and enduring. I believe that any attempt to break up the Union would have a devastating effect on our communities and our economies. We are neighbours and friends and we are much stronger together than we are apart. This has been exemplified by the UK response to the Covid-19 outbreak as the Prime Minister has set out.
Although Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU, the UK as whole decided to leave. This means that we left the bloc as one country. The devolved administrations will see powers returned to them from Brussels and our elected representatives will have more of a say over the issues affecting local people.
The UK Internal Market Bill will support this, protecting the integrity of the UK and ensuring that businesses can continue to trade seamlessly across the UK – just as they have done for hundreds of years. As we recover from the Coronavirus pandemic, it will also help to protect jobs and support our economic recovery.
Please rest assured that I will work hard to protect the interests of the Union and to deliver the referendum result. I do not believe that leaving the EU and maintaining the integrity of the UK are mutually exclusive.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
Kind regards, Alister
