Dear Constituent,
Thank you for contacting me about the health and care sector and future immigration.
The Coronavirus pandemic has proven beyond all doubt the need for an immigration system that will not just allow but actively welcome a range of health professionals to the United Kingdom. I welcome the fact that the Government has ensured that this will be the case. The new Health and Care Visa, to launch this summer, will create a new fast-track visa route for eligible health and care professionals. It is good news that health professionals will be able to apply from August.
There are some key and welcome benefits to this new route. A reduced visa application fee will apply compared to that paid by other skilled workers and successful applicants will be exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge. It is good news that the process will be quick and streamlined. Those applying on this route can expect a decision on whether they can work in the UK within just three weeks.
It is important to consider that this is just another way the Home Office is supporting overseas healthcare staff. Ministers have already taken action to extend visas and create a bereavement scheme. This builds on the significant decision to permanently exempt health and social care workers and their dependants from the Immigration Health Surcharge. I welcome that those who made payments since 31 March 2020 will be refunded.
However, I understand that you have concerns about the eligibility criteria of this new visa. The care sector plays an absolutely vital role in our society and I understand the Government is working closely with the sector to support and recognise the contribution of care workers. It is good news that Ministers are focusing on training and building a career structure for those in the sector.
I agree with the Independent Migration Advisory Committee who have been very clear that immigration is not the answer to the challenges in the social care sector. While you may not agree with this approach, I believe we should be investing in our domestic workforce. This will help provide and expand opportunities across Dumfries & Galloway.
Kind regards, Alister
